The Santa Ana Volcano hike is a moderately challenging, 4.3-mile round trip hike in El Salvador's Cerro Verde National Park with a summit elevation of 2,381 meters (7,812 feet). The trail takes about 3 hours round trip and is known for its rewarding views of the blue-green crater lake at the top and the nearby Izalco volcano. Hikers can expect to walk through different forest types before reaching the rocky summit.

What to expect on the trail

The trail begins in a shaded cloud forest and gradually transitions to open areas with small plants and rocks. The final part of the hike is steeper and involves walking on bumpy, rocky, and eroded volcanic terrain. You will have the chance to see the Izalco volcano and the stunning turquoise crater lake at the summit.
