Suchitoto is located just 47 km north from San Salvador. Suchitoto is located where the first capital of El Salvador was founded by the first Spanish. Suchitoto is a prehispanic nahuat word which means flower-bird. Suchitoto has many bars and nice restaurants with sights of the Lake Suchitlan. The environment in Suchitoto is very relaxed and open minded, there is some night life in the downtown area, the area is generally safe for tourists.

Antigua was the declared the capital of La Capitania General de Guatemala, which was the first institution established to control the territory now known as Central America.
